British actually played both arab and israeli sides. Britain even gave entirety of Jordan to the arabs.
Both palestinians and israelis fought for their independence to happen, before 1948. And they BOTH were given a state. Only ONE of them were ok with it, while the other decided to declare war and not focus on nation-building.
